About Dr. Brotzman

Dr. Brotzman has 27 years of orthopedic surgery practice experience, including a multi-year role previously as a division 1 team physician, with an early heavy academic background including previous roles in training residents at the University of Texas at  San Antonio Health Science Center and at Texas A&M medical school, and of course, as the author of four editions  of the textbook Clinical Orthopedic Rehabilitation, which is a best-selling internationally  published textbook for the second largest medical publisher in the world (Mosby Harcourt Elseviere )

This textbook has been translated into 13 languages and is required reading for multiple medical programs, physical therapy doctoral programs, chiropractic training programs, and physical medicine and rehab training programs.

Dr. Brotzman has also become a leader at the forefront of regenerative medicine techniques and wellness for athletes and patients including MACI techniques that harvest articular cartilage cells from the knee, are grown in large numbers, and subsequently transferred back into large defects of the patient’s cartilage of the knee.

Dr. Brotzman is also quite knowledgeable and a cutting edge is leading innovator in the use of platelet-rich plasma in soft tissue scenarios such as tendinopathies and other non-healing tissue areas as well as it use of platelet-rich plasma in arthritic joints.

From conservative therapy to cutting-edge surgical techniques, Dr. Brotzman wants to help professional and college and high school athletes and numerous weekend warriors achieve their goals while remaining healthy over the long term.

A Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Brotzman then received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. 

He graduated top 10 in his medical school class (AOA honors) and earned multiple awards for being the most outstanding student in his class including the Samuel Spira scholarship for best plastic surgery student, and the HJ Ehlers award for most outstanding general surgery student in his medical school class.

After completing medical school, Dr. Brotzman spent five years of orthopedic surgery residency at the prestigious Campbell Clinic at the University of Tennessee Orthopaedic Surgery program. This top program is the origin of the leading orthopedic surgical textbook in the world entitled Campbell’s Operative Orthopedics, the best-selling international orthopedic textbook for the last 25 years.

He also completed an additional fellowship training in lower extremity injuries at the Campbell Clinic to round out 14 years of training and then 27 years of clinical orthopedic surgery private practice experience as an author, Division I team physician, clinical instructor, and associate professor for several Texas medical schools, etc.

Dr. Brotzman’s current areas of added special interest and special techniques at this point include arthroscopic knee surgery, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, ankle reconstructions for recurrent ankle instability (Brostrom procedures), achilles rupture techniques, foot and ankle reconstruction, and many innovative, non-operative biological techniques including extracorporeal shockwave therapy for tendinopathies, platelet rich plasma treatment, and numerous rehabilitation algorithms from his textbooks.

As a surgeon involved primarily with athletes and motivated weekend warriors, Dr. Brotzman does not perform total knee replacements or hip replacements.
